Producing since the mid nineties, Ashley Anderson aka Katalyst initially produced under the moniker of Moonrock, releasing a self-titled album in ’98 and tracks on Cafe Del Mar and Dope on Plastic. With Geoff Barrow from Portishead he established INVADA Records and released his debut, Manipulating Agent.
Lauded for his collective mindset, Katalyst’s 2007 What’s Happening saw him working with Katie Noonan, Mat McHugh (The Beautiful Girls), Adalita (Magic Dirt), Hau (Koolism), J-Live, Stephanie McKay, and Steve Spacek. 2011’s Deep Impressions completed a trilogy of producer albums and saw further collabs with the Pharcyde‘s Bootie Brown, Buff 1, and Ms Jade McRae
In 2012 Katalyst unveiled his new hip-hop collective of 35 members orbiting around a core of three producers, Quakers on Stones Throw Records. Hailed as an instant classic, Quakers made Giles Peterson’s Best of 2012 and iTunes UK Best New Hip Hop Act.
What’s Happening was nominated for a prestigious J Award followed by another ARIA nomination in 2008, with the track How Bout Us feat Steve Spacek featuring in Gilles Peterson’s top 20 tracks for 2008.
His current release Detorit’s Son with MC Guilty Simpson has been met with critical acclaim internationally and hailed by some as his best album to date.
All of Katalyst’s albums have received ARIA nominations and rare international support, with a few DMA gongs going to Ashley personally as Best Producer.
